Custom-stained ash

The cabinetry is ash, finished in a green stain rather than paint so the grain still reads. We mixed the color in our studio, and the finisher matched it by hand. The appliances are paneled in the same ash, so the run of wood is never interrupted.

Hand-laid Fireclay tile

The 1×1 and 1×6 pieces were taken off their sheets and set one by one, in a pattern we drew for this kitchen. The tile runs behind the open shelves and up the range hood. Honed Calacatta Veneto covers the counters and the wall behind the range.

Keeping what worked

The original layout was small, but it worked, so we kept it and added open shelving. The hardware and faucet are unlacquered brass, which darkens with every use. The kitchen keeps changing long after we leave.
